As a U.S. / U.K. / Swiss citizen on expatriate assignment by my employer to Amsterdam, I unexpectedly underwent two emergency surgeries in June 2013 for removal of a tumor blocking the intestine and a diagnosis of colon cancer. A further CT scan revealed a tumor in the lungs. The attempt by the pulmonary oncologist to biopsy the mass was not successful due to its location. I was referred to Dr. Rijna for his review of my case with his 15+ years’ expertise in pulmonary surgery. I have the highest respect and regard for Dr. Rijna. Unlike many doctors, he took the time to show me exactly where the tumor lay and clearly explain the surgical options for its removal. Using both his computer to project the scan as well as drawings in a textbook from his medical library, he detailed his recommended procedure and the possible outcomes. He imparted this information in a calm, reassuring manner. Even when discussing the possible negative outcomes, his choice of words was neither intimidating nor frightening, as I have experienced on other occasions with other doctors. The surgery went well; the outcome was far better than expected; and I recovered quickly. Although many patients may highlight only Dr. Rijna’s surgical competence, I wish to note that his interpersonal skills in communicating with patients are an equally commendable aspect of his professional profile. His calm, instructive approach immediately makes a patient feel that he/she is in good hands and that Dr. Rijna will do everything posssible for a positive outcome. Even during post-operative follow-up appointments when his schedule was very full, I never felt that Dr. Rijna was trying to “push” me out of his office. He always answered my questions in a thoughtful manner and with a word of encouragement. It is now 17 months since the first 2 emergency surgeries and cancer diagnosis. I have since had 2 more surgeries, 6 months of chemotherapy, and innumerable blood tests, scans, x-rays, MRI’s, radiograms, biopsies. I have now almost fully recovered and am beginning to resume a normal, active life. My sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Rijna for the significant part he has played in my successful recovery after an initial, frightening prognosis and 17 months of intensive treatment.
